The word 'vaccine' will be 'Word of the Year' of 2021. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary calls "vaccine" the word for 2021 and says it was the most searched word this year.

According to the Associated Press, Peter Soko Luski, editor of Merriam-Webster, said: "Every day in 2021, the word is very high in our data."

The search for the word vaccine in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary increased by 601% compared to 2020 when the first dose of the vaccine was given in the United States.

Peter Sokolowski says the search for the word was 1,048 per cent higher this year than in 2019. People were interested in the word because of the unequal distribution of vaccines, reluctance to get vaccinated, vaccine passports, and vaccination.

He said that the word vaccine was not born in one day. The word was first used in 1882, and references to it occur even earlier. The use of the word vaccination dates back to 1714.

Other dictionaries select the word of the year through a committee, while Webster is selected based on how much of a word was searched.

The company has been choosing Word of the Year since 2008.

The most searched words on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary after the word vaccine include Inscription, Infrastructure, Preservation, and No Med.
